Recently I had the pleasure of joining Greg from Shield K9 Ottawa and Jessica from A Dog’s New Life for an episode of the Dog Talk podcast.
We filmed the conversation at Marival Distinct Luxury Residences and discussed the realities of rescue dogs in Mexico, street dog behavior, and how training helps rescue dogs successfully transition into homes.
A big thank you to Greg for hosting the conversation and helping bring attention to the work rescues and trainers are doing for dogs here.
What We Discussed
In this 38-minute conversation we talked about:
- Why there are so many street dogs in Mexico
- The typical mental state of rescue dogs
- How rescues can manage large groups of dogs with minimal conflict
- The realities of running a rescue
- The role training plays in helping rescue dogs succeed
Jess also shared insights into the daily work behind running A Dog’s New Life and the challenges rescues face that most people never see. If you’re interested in rescue dogs, adoption, or dog training, I hope you enjoy the discussion.

Esme and Camila
During the podcast, Greg also introduced two dogs from A Dog’s New Life named Esme and Camila. They recently traveled to Canada to work with Greg at Shield K9 Ottawa.
They are completing a four week board and train program to help prepare them for life in a home. Both dogs are currently available for adoption in Ottawa and we are excited to see them find the right families.
If you are interested in learning more about Esme or Camila, or would like to support the work being done by A Dog’s New Life, we encourage you to reach out or visit their website for more information.

Thank You
It was an honor to be part of the conversation.
Thank you again to:
- Greg Derrett and Shield K9 Ottawa
- Jessica Garibay and the team at A Dog’s New Life
- Marival Distinct Luxury Residences for hosting the filming
